Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur recently launched the first season of "Swaraj", a serial on India’s freedom struggle, on OTT platform Amazon Prime-- terming it as a true tribute to the unsung great heroes.

Thakur launched the series on the over-the-top (OTT) platform on Tuesday. Speaking at the event, Thakur said it was a true tribute to all those unsung great heroes of our independence who sacrificed everything for the country.

"These are the wars which got lost somewhere in the pages of history. I am confident that this series will instill a sense of pride in our youth towards the history of our nation," Thakur said.

The serial was commissioned after taking inspiration from the "Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav" national campaign of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and captures the stories of bravery in India's freedom struggle about which very few people know.

Produced by Contiloe Pictures, the 75-episode show tells the stories of courage and bravery of the country's freedom fighters.

The serial also narrates India’s historical journey from 1498 when Vasco da Gama first reached India to 1947 when India achieved independence. The serial tells stories of unsung heroes like Sidhu Murmu and Kanhu Murmu, Rani Abbakka, Bakshi Jagabandhu, Tilka Majhi, Shivappa Nayaka, Kanhoji Angre, Tirot Sing, Rani Gaidinliu etc. along with celebrated freedom fighters like Rani Lakshmibai, Maharaj Shivaji, Tatya Tope, Madam Bhikaji Kama.

The first season of "Swaraj" will have 10 episodes and will be dubbed in seven regional languages -- Marathi, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, Bengali, Kannada and Malayalam.

The series will help the national and international audience understand the spirit of the country's 500-year-long relentless struggle to gain independence from colonial rulers, Thakur added.

He also mentioned Prasar Bharati's contribution to the series, saying Doordarshan and Akashvani have time and again channelized the emotions of countrymen in the right direction with their memorable programs.

The minister further informed that a new 52-episode serial "Sardar: The Game Changer" has been launched by Doordarshan on March 10 to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.
