UPSC chairman acknowledges tough Prelims, points to textbooks and official sources

UPSC Chairman Dr Ajay Kumar has defended the Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026 question paper amid widespread discussion over its difficulty level, saying that the questions were drawn from standard and reliable sources commonly used by serious aspirants.

In a post on his official LinkedIn profile, Kumar said candidates could review the provisional answer key and submit representations if they disagreed with any of the answers.

The remarks come after many aspirants and educators described the May 24 preliminary examination as one of the toughest in recent years.

Social media platforms saw numerous comments labeling the paper as lengthy, unpredictable, and heavily dependent on guesswork.

Addressing these concerns, Kumar said, “Most answers are based on standard textbooks, government websites, government press releases, and reputed newspapers—the core sources serious aspirants rely on.”

He added, “I understand this year's Prelims felt quite tough and challenging for many aspirants. In such situations, the official provisional key provides much-needed clarity."

According to a Press Information Bureau (PIB) release, UPSC examination papers are prepared by subject matter experts from across the country.

The release stated that these experts design question papers in line with the objectives of the examination while ensuring fairness for candidates from varied academic, social, and regional backgrounds.

The UPSC released the provisional answer key for the Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026 on May 27, three days after the test was conducted.

Candidates can challenge the answer key through the Online Question Paper Representation Portal (QPRep) available at upsconline.nic.in until 6 pm on May 31.

To file an objection, candidates must identify the answer they believe is correct, provide a brief explanation, and submit supporting evidence from three authentic sources.

Kumar said the representation process is an important part of maintaining transparency and fairness in the examination system. All objections received from candidates will be reviewed by teams of subject experts before the final answer key is prepared.

The commission has clarified that the final answer key will be published only after the declaration of the final examination results.

Nearly 5.49 lakh candidates appeared for the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination 2026, which is being conducted for 933 Civil Services vacancies and 80 Indian Forest Service (IFoS) posts.
