Sangita Srivastava reappointed as Allahabad University vice-chancellor for second term

Professor Sangita Srivastava has been reappointed as the vice-chancellor of Allahabad University for a second five-year term, according to an order issued by the Union Education Ministry.

Her new tenure took effect from Sep 16 and will continue for five years or until she reaches the age of 70, whichever comes earlier. The appointment was approved by President Droupadi Murmu in her capacity as Visitor of the university.

The Education Ministry conveyed the appointment to the university through a letter dated Sep 22. The order was issued by the ministry’s Department of Higher Education.

First Allahabad University VC to get a second term

With the reappointment, Srivastava becomes the first vice-chancellor in Allahabad University’s history to serve a second term, according to reports.

She first took charge as the university’s regular vice-chancellor on November 30, 2020. Her initial five-year term was scheduled to end in November 2025.

She was later allowed to continue in the post while the process of appointing a successor was pending. Her fresh appointment now formally begins from Sep 16.

Srivastava was the first woman to serve as vice-chancellor of Allahabad University. She was also the first faculty member of the university to become its vice-chancellor after the institution received Central University status in 2005.

Allahabad University, one of India's oldest universities, is a Central University and is based in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. The university’s official website currently lists Prof. Sangita Srivastava as its vice-chancellor.

Srivastava's first five-year term ended in November 2025. However, she continued as vice-chancellor after the Education Ministry extended her tenure while the selection process for a successor remained incomplete.

The latest order supersedes that interim arrangement by formally appointing her for a fresh five-year term.

The reappointment means Srivastava will continue to lead the university for another term, subject to the condition that her tenure will end earlier if she reaches the age of 70 before completing the five years.
