Jamia Millia Islamia approves one-year PG programs in 13 disciplines through ODL and online modes

Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) has approved one-year postgraduate programs in 13 disciplines through Open and Distance Learning (ODL) and Online Learning (OL) modes for the 2026-27 academic session.

The approved programs include 11 Master of Arts (MA) courses, along with a one-year Master of Business Administration (MBA) and Master of Commerce (MCom) in Business Management. The programs will be offered through the university's Centre for Distance and Online Education (CDOE).

The decision has been taken in accordance with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and applicable University Grants Commission (UGC) regulations and their amendments.

JMI one-year MA programs

According to the university's order, the one-year MA programs approved for ODL and/or online learning are:

• English
• Geography
• Hindi
• History
• Human Resource Management
• Islamic Studies
• Political Science
• Public Administration
• Sociology
• Urdu

The university has also approved a one-year MBA and a one-year MCom in Business Management. Both will be offered through the CDOE under the applicable ODL and online learning framework.

The order was issued on September 21 by JMI Registrar Prof. Md Mahtab Alam Rizvi on behalf of the Majlis-i-Talimi, or Academic Council. It stated that the action taken by the Vice-Chancellor would be placed before the Academic Council at its next meeting for reporting.

JMI has directed deans, directors, heads of departments and other officials concerned to take note of the decision. The Director of the CDOE has also been asked to take the necessary steps to implement the approved programs.

Admission details for the new postgraduate courses, including eligibility criteria, fees, application dates, program structure and commencement schedule, are expected to be provided through subsequent university notifications.

JMI approves nine certificate programs

Alongside the postgraduate programs, JMI has approved nine certificate programs through its Centre for Distance and Online Education from the 2026-27 academic session.

The approved certificate courses are:

• Certificate in French Language
• Certificate in Spanish Language
• Certificate in Chinese Language
• Certificate in Korean Language
• Certificate in Japanese Language
• Certificate in Russian Language
• Certificate in German Language
• Certificate in Indian Knowledge System
• Certificate in Photography and Video Editing

Candidates who have passed Class 12 from a recognized board will be eligible to pursue the certificate programs, according to the approved provisions.

The fee for most of the certificate programs has been fixed at ₹8,000, while the Certificate in Indian Knowledge System (IKS) will cost ₹5,000.

Most of the certificate programs will have a duration of one year. The Indian Knowledge System and Photography and Video Editing programs are exceptions to this duration, with further course details expected to be issued by the CDOE.

Expansion of JMI's distance and online offerings

The new postgraduate and certificate programs expand the range of courses available through JMI's Centre for Distance and Online Education.

The university's existing distance and online programs are also listed on the CDOE's official website. Students interested in the newly approved courses will have to wait for JMI's formal admission notification for program-specific eligibility requirements, fees, application procedures and schedules.

The expansion comes as higher education institutions implement changes under the NEP 2020 framework and increase the range of programs available through flexible learning modes.
