Anna University and COEP Technological University take the second and third spots in the metro region category of IIRF’s 2025 state university rankings.
In the Indian Institutional Ranking Framework (IIRF) 2025, Jadavpur University, Kolkata, has secured the top rank in the State University Metro Region category, reaffirming its status as one of the leading government higher education institutions in India.
Anna University in Chennai and COEP Technological University in Pune have claimed the second and third ranks, respectively.
Jadavpur University, Kolkata
Established in 1955, Jadavpur University is a state-level, government public university in West Bengal. It houses 36 departments and offers over 130 academic programs at undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels.
The courses, approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC), span arts, science, engineering and technology, and interdisciplinary studies.
Additionally, the university provides distance learning opportunities in collaboration with the Indira Gandhi National Open University.
Popular programs include BE/BTech, BSc, MTech, and MBA. Jadavpur University is affiliated with two prominent institutions, JD Birla Institute and the Institute of Business Management.
The university's placement performance is a highlight, with median packages of ₹10 LPA for BTech and ₹9.1 LPA for MTech students during the 2023 placement season.
Notably, the Computer Science and Engineering department recorded a 94% placement rate.
Admissions to Jadavpur University are both merit- and entrance-based, with criteria varying by course.
The university's flagship engineering programs include specializations such as computer science and engineering, electrical engineering, information technology, and electronics and telecommunication engineering.
In the 2024 placement season, the highest domestic and international packages reached ₹57 LPA and ₹140 LPA, respectively.
The average package for engineering graduates was ₹11 LPA. The arts and science departments also saw impressive results, with the highest packages of ₹16.5 LPA and ₹14.5 LPA, respectively.
Anna University, Chennai
Ranked second in the IIRF 2025 State University Metro Region category, Anna University is a renowned state government university based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.
Established in 1978, the university is well-known for its academic excellence in engineering, science, and management education.
Anna University offers a diverse portfolio of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs across disciplines including architecture, commerce, and arts.

COEP Technological University, Pune
COEP Technological University, formerly the College of Engineering Pune, has secured the third position in the IIRF 2025 rankings in the State University Metro Region category.
Established in 1854, it is now a unitary public university governed by the Maharashtra state government. Through its 14 academic departments, the university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in fields such as management, planning, and engineering.
COEP admits students based on scores from national and state-level entrance exams, including MHT-CET, MAH-CET, GATE, and JEE Main, followed by counseling.
In the 2023 placement cycle, over 563 offers were made by reputable companies.
The highest salary package reached ₹87 LPA, while the average package stood at ₹12 LPA. Companies such as Deloitte, Bajaj, J.P. Morgan, Caterpillar, Deutsche Bank, and Texas Instruments are among the top recruiters.
