HBTU Kanpur leads IIRF 2025 rankings for state universities in urban regions

Harcourt Butler Technical University (HBTU), Kanpur, has claimed Rank 1 in the Indian Institutional Ranking Framework (IIRF) 2025 under the State University Urban Region category.

With this achievement, HBTU strengthens its reputation as one of the top 10 government universities in India and a leading center for technical education.

Securing Rank 2 and Rank 3, respectively, Panjab University Chandigarh and King George’s Medical University (KGMU) Lucknow continue to reinforce their standing among the top 10 government universities in India, with Panjab University excelling in multidisciplinary education and KGMU leading in the field of medical sciences.

HBTU Kanpur

Established in 2016 by the Government of Uttar Pradesh, HBTU Kanpur is recognized by the University Grants Commission (UGC) and approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

The university has forged international collaborations with institutions such as the University of South Florida, Florida Polytechnic University, and the Technical University of Kosice, Slovakia.

It has also partnered with IIT Kanpur under the National Design Innovation Centre Scheme to drive innovation and entrepreneurship.

HBTU offers a wide range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs in engineering, technology, basic & applied sciences, humanities, social science & management, architecture, and other professional fields.

Admissions are based on national-level entrance exams like JEE Main, CUET, NIMCET, and CAT, while PhD programs follow a university-conducted entrance test and interview process.

In the 2023–24 placement season, HBTU Kanpur saw 484 job offers. The highest package stood at ₹36 LPA, and the average package was ₹9.30 LPA, with an overall placement rate of 84.02%.

Top recruiters included Adani Wilmar, Cognizant, Reliance, Samsung, IBM, Amazon, and Wipro. The university also supports startups through its dedicated Technology Business Incubator (TBI).

Panjab University, Chandigarh

Ranked 2 in the IIRF 2025 State University Urban Region category, Panjab University was established in 1882 as the University of the Panjab in Lahore and was relocated to Chandigarh in 1947 after India’s Partition.

Panjab University (PUCHD) offers a diverse range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral courses across streams such as business and management studies, commerce, arts, design, engineering, and humanities & social sciences.

Admissions for 2025 are currently open and primarily entrance-based. The university conducts exams including PU MET, PU-CET (UG), PU-CET (PG), and PhD entrance tests for various programs.

King George’s Medical University, Lucknow

Ranked 3 in the IIRF 2025 rankings, King George’s Medical University (KGMU), Lucknow, is one of India’s oldest and most prestigious medical institutions. Established in 1905 as King George’s Medical College, KGMU is approved by UGC, DCI, and MCI.

With more than 60 departments and affiliated colleges, KGMU offers a broad spectrum of UG, PG, and super-specialty programs across disciplines such as biochemistry, cardiology, and other clinical and para-clinical fields. The university continues to be a major contributor to India’s medical education and research landscape.
