MS Univ approves new sociology courses on PM Modi leadership, RSS ideology

The Faculty of Arts at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda has revised its Sociology curriculum to include a set of new courses centered on contemporary socio-political themes, following approval from the Board of Studies.

Among the additions are modules on “Modi-tattva” and the ideology of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, signaling a shift toward incorporating current political and organizational frameworks into academic study.

The “Modi-tattva” course focuses on the personality, leadership style, and governance approach of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

It will examine his administrative methods, communication strategies, and the societal impact of his policies through a sociological perspective.

The syllabus also includes analysis of initiatives such as “Make in India” to assess their influence on development and social change.

Another major component introduces a structured study of the RSS. The course will cover its origins, historical evolution, and contributions to socio-cultural development.

Topics include cultural nationalism, environmental conservation efforts, and the organization’s role during India’s freedom movement. Students will also study its operational framework, particularly in the context of nonprofit management.

In total, four new courses have been cleared, each aimed at expanding students’ understanding of India’s social and intellectual traditions.

One section titled “Leading Personalities” examines the ideas of Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Sri Aurobindo, and B. R. Ambedkar, along with governance models and reforms associated with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and Sayajirao Gaekwad III.

Another module focuses on “Nationalism,” with an emphasis on clarifying the concepts of nation and state while incorporating perspectives from Indian sociologists.

According to Dr Virendrasinh, Head of the Department of Sociology, the new curriculum is designed to help students better understand the current socio-political environment.

He noted that recent research engagement with policy institutions such as NITI Aayog has already encouraged students to explore governance-related themes. Formalizing these topics within the curriculum, he said, is a natural next step.

University officials say the changes are intended to align sociology teaching with present-day realities by integrating historical thought with contemporary political analysis. The revision is expected to prompt debate within academic circles and beyond.
