Mohan Babu University partners with AP Police for QR-based traveler safety system

Mohan Babu University has partnered with the Andhra Pradesh Police in NTR district to introduce a QR code-based real-time traveler safety system aimed at improving passenger security across public and rental transport.

The technology allows passengers to instantly access verified vehicle and driver details while enabling police authorities to receive live trip location data, ensuring quicker intervention in case of emergencies. The initiative is intended to enhance transparency and strengthen on-road safety through real-time monitoring.

The system has been developed by G. Srinivas Reddy, a fourth-year engineering student at the university, through his startup SAS Electronics LLP, under the guidance of Traffic DCP Ms. Shaik Shareena Begum. It was inaugurated by Sri S.V. Rajasekhar Babu, IPS.

As part of the implementation, QR code stickers are installed behind the driver’s seat in registered vehicles. When scanned using a smartphone, the code provides authenticated vehicle registration details, driver credentials, and trip information. Simultaneously, the passenger’s live location is securely shared with the police control room and nearby patrol units for the duration of the journey.

In cases of emergencies, unsafe driving, or suspicious activity, police teams can track the vehicle in real time and dispatch the nearest patrol unit, significantly reducing response time. The system is being rolled out across autorickshaws and rental vehicles, including those operating on aggregator platforms such as Uber, Ola, and Rapido.

The platform also features a passenger rating and feedback mechanism, with a focus on improving safety for women and children. Repeated complaints or consistently low ratings trigger alerts and may lead to disciplinary action, while drivers maintaining strong safety records could receive incentives.

Speaking at the launch, Traffic DCP Ms. Shaik Shareena Begum said, “Reducing road accidents and ensuring smooth traffic movement remain our top priorities. Many fatalities occur due to minor negligence, and preventive measures can significantly reduce such incidents. The introduction of real-time location tracking through this app will enhance police response time and strengthen traveler safety.”

Vinay Maheshwari, executive director and trustee, Mohan Babu University, said, “It is encouraging to see our students develop technologically advanced, real-world solutions that are being implemented at a district level. This reflects our commitment to applied learning and problem-solving, empowering students to create meaningful impact through innovation.”

Separately, the student innovator is working on another application for the Motor Transport Office focused on vehicle data management and controlled access for officials. The project is currently in the production stage.
