Women among victims as chaos erupts during prayer; CM Nitish Kumar announces compensation, probe likely.

At least eight people were killed and several others injured in a stampede at the Maa Sheetla Mandir in Bihar’s Nalanda district on March 31, triggering serious questions over crowd management and administrative preparedness.
The tragedy unfolded during a prayer gathering at the temple in Maghra village, where a large number of devotees had assembled. According to officials at the scene, most of the victims were women. Police and district administration teams rushed to the spot soon after the incident, and rescue operations were launched.

Overcrowding, barricade collapse suspected
Preliminary inputs suggest that overcrowding within the temple premises led to panic, eventually triggering the stampede. Sources indicated that barricades came under intense pressure as the crowd swelled and eventually gave way, causing people to fall and get trampled in the chaos.
Several injured devotees were shifted to nearby hospitals, though authorities are yet to release a detailed official casualty and injury count.
Eyewitnesses allege administrative failure
Survivors and eyewitnesses blamed inadequate arrangements for the disaster, alleging that authorities failed to anticipate and manage the heavy turnout.
A devotee, Mamata Devi, was quoted as saying by ANI that large crowds are routine on Tuesdays due to the religious significance of the temple. She alleged that the situation spiralled out of control due to poor management and lack of officials at the site when the stampede broke out.
Another eyewitness, speaking to Press Trust of India, said the swelling crowd was not regulated in time. “They should have stopped the crowd when it increased. Instead, people were pushed forward until many were trapped and crushed,” the person said.
Bihar Sharif Assistant Superintendent of Police Noorul Haque confirmed that at least eight women died in the incident. He added that police and administrative officials are on-site, coordinating rescue and relief efforts.
CM Nitish Kumar announces compensation
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar expressed grief over the loss of lives and announced compensation for the victims’ families. Senior officials have been directed to oversee relief measures and ensure proper medical care for the injured.
With questions mounting over safety lapses at crowded religious gatherings, the incident is likely to prompt a detailed probe into crowd control protocols and accountability at the local administration level.
