The Union Territory Administration of Ladakh has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Jammu to establish a satellite campus in Leh, marking a major expansion of technical education infrastructure in the region.

Describing the development as a “historic and transformational moment” for Ladakh’s youth, the Lieutenant Governor said the initiative is expected to strengthen access to quality engineering education within the region.

Officials said the collaboration aims to address the long-standing challenges faced by students from Ladakh, many of whom are required to move outside the region for higher technical studies.

The administration stated that the project would help reduce both financial and emotional pressure on families living in remote and high-altitude areas while creating opportunities in research, innovation, entrepreneurship, and employment.

Under the first phase of the agreement, nearly 40 students from Ladakh are expected to begin studying at IIT Jammu from the July-August 2026 academic session.

Authorities also announced plans to establish a temporary satellite campus at the Government Polytechnic College in Leh to conduct academic activities locally.

In the long term, a full-fledged residential engineering campus has been proposed in Kargil.

IIT Jammu will initially introduce programs in Civil Engineering and Artificial Intelligence and Data Science. According to officials, the courses have been selected to align with Ladakh’s developmental priorities and emerging technology trends.

The Civil Engineering program will focus on sustainable and climate-resilient infrastructure suitable for mountainous terrain, while the Artificial Intelligence and Data Science program is intended to prepare students for careers in digital technologies and innovation-driven sectors.

The Lieutenant Governor said the partnership would support the development of future scientists, engineers, researchers, and innovators from Ladakh.

He added that the collaboration is also expected to encourage faculty exchange, startup incubation, innovation centers, and joint research initiatives.

Speaking during the event, he said strengthening local academic infrastructure remains a priority for the UT administration in order to improve educational access and reduce brain drain from the region.
