IISc Bengaluru launches comic book with Amar Chitra Katha to showcase its legacy

The Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, has introduced a comic book in collaboration with Amar Chitra Katha to present its history in a more accessible format for younger audiences.

The initiative aims to bring the institute’s legacy closer to the public by using a visual storytelling approach that combines historical events with engaging narratives.

Established by Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata during the colonial period, IISc has played a significant role in India’s scientific development, though much of its history remains less widely known.

“The idea was simple,” say those involved in the project. “How do we make IISc’s extraordinary history engaging and accessible?”

Developed with Amar Chitra Katha, the publication traces the institute’s journey from its early conception to its evolution into a leading research center.

The narrative covers key milestones, including support from the Mysore royal family and the institute’s opening in 1911.

The comic also highlights contributions of scientists, researchers, and leaders associated with IISc, placing their work within the broader context of nation-building and scientific progress.

The project took over two years to complete, involving faculty members, historians, archivists, and editorial teams to ensure accuracy while maintaining an engaging format. IISc said the effort focused on balancing factual detail with visual storytelling.

The comic was released on March 7, 2026, during the institute’s annual Open Day, where it received strong interest from visitors.

Currently available in English, Hindi, and Kannada, the publication is being distributed through the institute, with plans to expand availability to bookstores and online platforms.
