Missiles, drones and airstrikes ripple across West Asia as Iran targets US assets and Israel expands strikes, raising fears of a wider regional war.

Iran intensified its offensive against Israel and US-linked targets across West Asia on March 17, launching rockets and drones at the US embassy in Baghdad in what Iraqi security officials described as the most intense assault since the outbreak of the ongoing conflict.
According to Reuters, at least five drones and multiple rockets were fired from areas around Baghdad, marking a sharp escalation in Tehran’s strategy of targeting American assets and energy infrastructure in the region.

The expanding conflict reverberated across multiple capitals. Loud explosions were reported in Doha and Dubai, with residents in the UAE receiving emergency alerts warning of potential missile threats and urging them to seek immediate shelter.
Israel, meanwhile, widened its military operations in Lebanon, carrying out airstrikes on multiple neighborhoods in Beirut. Lebanese state media, cited by AFP, reported raids and artillery shelling in southern towns at dawn, alongside strikes on residential areas in Kafaat, Haret Hreik and Doha Aramoun, including an apartment building.
In Iraq, a missile strike on a residential building in Baghdad killed two people, believed to be Iranian advisers linked to Tehran-backed groups, according to initial reports.
The geopolitical tensions spilled into diplomacy, with Donald Trump expressing dissatisfaction with the UK after Prime Minister Keir Starmer said Britain would not be drawn into a wider war with Iran. Trump also indicated plans to delay a scheduled meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping by about a month.
Amid the escalating hostilities, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu struck a symbolic tone, addressing the Iranian public in a video message marking the Festival of Lights, expressing hope that “light will triumph over darkness.”
Beyond the battlefield, the conflict is beginning to disrupt global events and civilian life. Iran’s football federation is in talks with FIFA to shift its World Cup matches from the United States to Mexico, citing security concerns for its players. Iranian football chief Mehdi Taj said the team would not travel to the US after Trump reportedly indicated he could not guarantee their safety.
In Australia, members of Iran’s women’s football delegation who sought asylum are now training with a local club after being granted humanitarian visas, underscoring the broader human fallout of the crisis.
Calls for de-escalation are emerging, with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz warning that the conflict cannot be resolved militarily and urging a political solution, even as violence continues to spiral across the region.
