IIRF Engineering Rankings 2026: IIT Bombay tops India’s engineering colleges

IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Kanpur follow IIT Bombay as premier destinations for engineering education.

India's leading engineering institutes remain firmly dominated by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), with IIT Bombay securing the top position in the IIRF Engineering Rankings 2026. IIT Madras, IIT Delhi, IIT Kharagpur and IIT Kanpur followed closely behind, underscoring the continued dominance of the IIT system in engineering education, research and placements.

The latest rankings, released by the Indian Institutional Ranking Framework (IIRF), evaluated institutions on academic excellence, research output, industry collaboration, placement performance and overall institutional strength. The rankings come at a crucial time as lakhs of students prepare for engineering admissions across the country.

Top 5 engineering colleges in India: IIRF 2026

Beyond the top five, IIT Roorkee, IIT Guwahati, IIT BHU, IIT Patna and IIT Hyderabad completed the top 10 government engineering institutions, highlighting the strength of India's public technical education ecosystem.

Among private universities, BITS Pilani emerged as the highest-ranked engineering institution, followed by SRM Institute of Science and Technology, Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT), Manipal Academy of Higher Education and Thapar Institute of Engineering and Technology.

In the autonomous and affiliated private college category, BMS College of Engineering Bengaluru, RV College of Engineering Bengaluru, KIET Group of Institutions Ghaziabad, PSNA College of Engineering and Technology Dindigul, and Ajay Kumar Garg Engineering College Ghaziabad featured among the country's highest-ranked institutions.

The IIRF Engineering Rankings 2026 reaffirm the enduring appeal of IITs while also highlighting the growing competitiveness of private engineering colleges that continue to strengthen their academic, research and placement credentials.
