Delhi civic body plans new MCD Shri schools to boost education

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi has unveiled plans to launch a new category of schools called MCD Shri schools, modeled on the central government’s PM Shri initiative and the Delhi government’s CM Shri schools.

Announcing the move, Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh said the civic body will begin with two MCD Shri schools in each municipal zone during the first phase.

Admissions will prioritize meritorious students, with the aim of creating institutions that support academic excellence and prepare learners for higher education.

“These schools will focus on identifying and nurturing students’ abilities while preparing them for higher studies,” Singh said.

Emphasizing the broader role of education, he added, “Education, values and discipline together form the backbone of society,” and described teachers as the true builders of the nation who shape young minds and instill the right values.

Education Committee Chairman Yogesh Verma said the MCD is placing special focus on spotting talent within its schools.

“As many as 100 outstanding students from Class five will be selected every year, with their names and achievements in academics, sports, or co-curricular activities published on the Corporation’s website to help other schools offer them admission,” Verma said.

He added that the civic body is also strengthening basic facilities, including mid day meals, uniforms, and other essential support, alongside academic initiatives.
