Lawmakers in the US Congress are scrambling to avert a government shutdown after President-elect Trump called for getting rid of the limit the US can borrow to pay for expenses like salaries, social security and national defense.

Republican lawmakers in the United States (US) Congress raced on Dec 19 to find a legislative solution after President-elect Donald Trump dismissed a bipartisan proposal aimed at preventing a partial government shutdown.
Trump escalated the political standoff by calling on Congress to abolish the nation's debt ceiling entirely, further complicating efforts to reach a compromise.
If no agreement is reached by Dec 21, the government faces a potential shutdown that could disrupt essential services such as air travel, national security, and law enforcement. Over two million federal employees risk missing their paychecks just days before Christmas.
A bipartisan deal involves cooperation between members of both major political parties — Republicans and Democrats — in the US Congress.
Lawmakers from both sides had negotiated a compromise to ensure continued funding for federal agencies, but Trump’s rejection of the deal created a political deadlock.
The debt ceiling represents the maximum amount of money the US government is authorized to borrow to meet its financial obligations, including expenses like federal salaries, social security, and national defense.
Trump’s demand to eliminate the debt ceiling entirely would allow the government to borrow funds as needed without seeking approval from Congress each time the limit is reached. While this could provide greater financial flexibility, it has sparked concerns about unchecked government spending.
The US House of Representatives, controlled by Republicans, and the Democratic-majority Senate are under significant pressure to pass a spending bill. Despite emergency negotiations, no resolution was reached by late December 19.
Analysts warn that a prolonged shutdown could severely impact the economy and erode public trust in the government’s fiscal management. Political experts view Trump’s push to abolish the debt ceiling as a bold but contentious move that could reshape the country’s financial policies.
Trump’s stance has divided lawmakers, with some Republicans supporting his call for sweeping fiscal reforms while Democrats argue that removing the debt ceiling could encourage reckless government spending.
With time running out, both parties must work urgently to avoid a shutdown that could disrupt essential services and cast a shadow over the holiday season.
