ISRO and Muskaan Foundation launch space lab in Arunachal

A new ISRO-supported space science laboratory was inaugurated on Aug 21 at Government Higher Secondary School in Mechukha, Arunachal Pradesh.

Developed in partnership with the Muskaan Foundation, the facility is intended to strengthen science education for students in one of India’s most remote regions.

Named the Pasang Wangchuk Sona ISRO Space Laboratory, the center commemorates the late father of Arunachal Pradesh Education Minister Pasang Dorjee Sona, who led the inauguration.

The initiative focuses on providing practical exposure to space technology and aims to spark scientific interest among schoolchildren living near the India-China border.

“This laboratory is not just an educational facility; it is a tribute to my late father’s unwavering belief in the power of education and curiosity,” said Sona.

“I hope it becomes a place where our children dream bigger, explore science fearlessly, and reach for the stars,” Sona added.

The lab is equipped to introduce students to subjects such as satellite systems, rocket science, and basic space exploration through interactive tools and models.

It is expected to function as a hub for STEM learning and innovation in the region.

The event saw participation from Shi-Yomi Deputy Commissioner Liyi Bagra, Deputy Director of School Education Tade Dabi, and Muskaan Foundation Chief Operating Officer Pranesh Debnath, along with teachers, students, and local residents.

This marks the second space education lab in Arunachal Pradesh. In November 2024, a similar facility was launched at Government Higher Secondary School in Yazali, Keyi Panyor district, through a collaboration between ISRO and Vyomika Space Academy.

Both projects are part of ISRO’s ongoing efforts to increase scientific outreach in underserved areas and foster the next generation of space scientists.

The Mechukha lab is expected to play a key role in motivating students in the region to pursue opportunities in science and technology.
