UK’s football business university to merge with BIMM University

The University Campus of Football Business (UCFB), a UK higher education provider specialising in the business and management of football, is set to merge with BIMM University, a provider of creative arts education.

Under the arrangement announced on Nov 3, UCFB will become a college of BIMM University. Its approximately 2,400 students will continue studying at its campuses in London and Manchester, while their degrees will be awarded by BIMM.

Founded in 2011, UCFB was established as a higher education institution dedicated to football business. Its first campus was located at Turf Moor, the home ground of Burnley FC, before it expanded its operations to Manchester and Wembley Stadium in London.

The institution offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes covering football business, sports management, coaching, performance analysis, sports psychology, journalism and broadcasting.

Several former Premier League footballers, including Joleon Lescott, Wes Morgan and Jason McAteer, are among its alumni.

UCFB programmes to join BIMM's creative arts portfolio

BIMM University has more than 8,000 students across the UK, Ireland and Germany. Its academic portfolio includes music, performing arts, creative technology and film.

The university comprises BIMM Music Institute, MetFilm School, MetStudios and Performers College. It has expanded from a single music college in Brighton, which had around 1,000 students in 2010.

UCFB chief executive Brendan Flood said the merger marked an important next chapter for the institution. He said the partnership would build on UCFB's industry relationships and specialist learning experience at its Wembley and Manchester campuses.

BIMM University chief executive and vice-chancellor Olivier Robert-Murphy said UCFB's expertise in football, sport and media would complement the university's existing areas of education.

He added that the partnership could create opportunities for collaboration across disciplines, particularly where sport intersects with business, media and entertainment.

Latest in a series of UK higher education mergers

The UCFB-BIMM agreement is the latest institutional tie-up in the UK higher education sector.

The University of Kent and the University of Greenwich began operating together under a single university group this autumn. Meanwhile, Cranfield University is due to become a faculty of King's College London on August 1, 2027.

The London Interdisciplinary School was acquired by French business school emlyon last month. In 2024, City, University of London merged with St George's, the specialist medical school, to form City St George's, University of London.

These developments reflect the changing institutional landscape of UK higher education, where providers are exploring mergers and partnerships while retaining specialist academic identities.
