In a sharp escalation, President Trump has warned of sweeping tariffs on Russia and its trade partners if no peace agreement is reached within 50 days, while pledging Patriot missile support for Ukraine via NATO allies.
In a significant escalation of his administration's Ukraine strategy, US President Donald Trump on July 14 warned that unless Russia agrees to a peace deal within 50 days, his government will impose 100% secondary tariffs on Russian goods and on countries that continue to trade with Moscow.
The ultimatum was announced during a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, where Trump also confirmed a coordinated supply of Patriot missile systems to Ukraine via NATO allies.
Simultaneously, Trump confirmed that advanced US-made Patriot missile systems would be supplied to Ukraine as part of a NATO-coordinated defense package.
European allies such as Germany, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Sweden, the Netherlands, and Canada are expected to contribute, with the US manufacturing replacements for their own arsenals.
The decision follows widespread frustration from Trump over repeated promises of de-escalation from Russian President Vladimir Putin that were followed by continued Russian attacks.
Trump described these pauses as “nice conversations” disrupted by fresh bombings . He said he conveyed to Putin that “talk doesn’t talk—it’s got to be action.”
NATO’s Rutte emphasized that this arrangement would rapidly replenish Ukraine’s defense capabilities, warning that other countries still trading with Russia risk being targeted if no peace deal materializes.
Ukrainian President Zelenskiy welcomed the move, thanking Trump for “willingness to support Ukraine and to continue working together to stop the killings and establish a lasting and just peace."
Meanwhile, some lawmakers, including Senators Lindsey Graham and Richard Blumenthal, are preparing legislation authorizing steep tariffs—up to 500%—targeting countries still purchasing Russian energy.
The Sanctioning Russia Act, currently being debated in Congress, outlines additional measures aimed at accelerating Russia's exit from the conflict. If enacted, it would grant unilateral powers to the president to enforce these penalties.
