Putin's remarks target the UK and the US, accusing them of arming Ukraine with long-range weapons to strike Russian territory.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has issued a warning, threatening to target the United Kingdom with a newly deployed ballistic missile in a sharp escalation of tensions amid the ongoing Ukraine war as reported by news agency PA Media.
The missile, which reportedly boasts a range of "several thousand kilometers," was recently used in an attack on Ukraine’s city of Dnipro, according to PA Media.
The UK government has condemned this move, stating that such actions by Russia only exacerbate the already volatile conflict.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's official spokesperson remarked, “My understanding is that it is the first time Russia has used a ballistic missile in Ukraine with this range.
It only strengthens our resolve to ensure Ukraine has the necessary support for self-defense against Russia’s reckless and illegal invasion.”
Putin’s threats against weapon suppliers
In a televised address, President Putin justified the missile strike, claiming that Russia has the right to respond to those aiding Ukraine with long-range weapons.
He emphasized that nations targeted by such measures would be notified in advance to allow for evacuation.
“In response to the use of American and British long-range weapons on November 21 of this year, the Russian armed forces launched a combined strike on one of the facilities of the Ukrainian defense industry,” Putin stated, referencing the attack on Dnipro.
The Russian leader directly addressed the involvement of the United States and the UK, highlighting their role in equipping Ukraine with advanced weaponry.
The US has supplied ATACMS missiles, while the UK has provided Storm Shadow missiles—both capable of striking targets within Russia.
The missile’s range reportedly surpasses that of the newly authorized American and British long-range weapons, raising alarms. The approximate distance from Moscow to London, about 2,500 kilometers, suggests the UK could be within the new missile’s reach.
Russia has claimed it intercepted two British-made Storm Shadow missiles, with debris allegedly found in the Kursk region, where Ukrainian forces have been active.
UK Defense Secretary John Healey acknowledged that Britain was aware of Russia’s plans to use this advanced ballistic missile for months.
However, he declined to confirm whether the UK had authorized the use of Storm Shadow missiles for strikes within Russian territory. “Public debates about operational decisions risk compromising security and ultimately benefit President Putin,” Healey stated.
Prime Minister Starmer reiterated the UK’s unwavering support for Ukraine in the House of Commons, declaring that such threats from Russia would not deter their efforts. He asserted, “Our support for Ukraine is in accordance with international law and always for self-defense.”
Diplomatic and Strategic Discussions
Amid rising tensions, the head of the UK’s armed forces recently visited Ukraine to assess its military requirements. This visit underscores Britain’s commitment to bolstering Ukraine’s defense as the war shows no signs of abating.
As Russia continues to deploy aggressive tactics and issue warnings to nations aiding Ukraine, the international community faces mounting pressure to navigate the conflict without escalating it further.
