Maldives ex‑minister Mohamed Shainee praises India’s role in disaster response, maritime security and climate projects ahead of PM Modi’s visit, citing growing strategic partnership.

Former Maldives Home Minister Mohamed Shainee, now acting as the nation’s lead responder, has lauded the strengthening relationship between the Maldives and India ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s scheduled visit.
Shainee emphasized India’s crucial role in maritime security, emergency response, and anti-terror cooperation, calling the partnership “robust and indispensable."

Shainee—who spearheaded the country’s response during the deadly 2024 Maafaru airport fire—highlighted the Indian Coast Guard’s prompt deployment of relief teams and logistical support during crises.
He described India’s assistance as a benchmark in regional disaster management collaboration.
As Maldivian media circulated early reports of Prime Minister Modi arriving later this month for bilateral talks, Shainee underlined expectations of stronger cooperation in maritime domain awareness, fisheries security, and countering trafficking.
He acknowledged recent Indian-funded infrastructure projects, such as harbour upgrades and climate resilience initiatives, signalling growing strategic convergence.
Islamabad News reported that internal consultations are underway in Malé to finalize the agenda of Modi’s visit, which is likely to cement agreements around security, renewable energy, tourism, and Blue Economy partnerships.
Regional experts say the Maldives views India as its foremost security partner, especially amid increasing geopolitical competition in the Indian Ocean.
Shainee highlighted India’s role in capacity building for Maldives’ National Disaster Management Authority and shared maritime surveillance exercises.
Maldivian commentators have welcomed the upcoming visit, seeing it as an opportunity to elevate bilateral ties through joint declarations and sectoral agreements, reinforcing India’s position as a trusted neighbour and the Maldives’ primary strategic ally.
