Goa’s Tourism Department acknowledges challenges but pledges to strengthen its appeal as India’s top holiday spot.

Amid a wave of social media criticism comparing Goa’s tourism sector unfavorably to destinations like Sri Lanka, the Goa government issued a statement countering these comparisons.
Highlighting key differences, the Department of Tourism noted that contrasting an Indian state with a country could lead to unrealistic expectations and an “inaccurate perspective.”
The Tourism Department clarified that while Goa faces limitations in international air connectivity, it is actively working with central authorities to improve flight options and facilitate smoother global access.
“Unlike entire countries, Goa operates within certain restrictions. Yet, we continue to collaborate with the Centre to enhance point-of-call and seat entitlements to support international routes,” the department emphasized.
Acknowledging that Goa’s accommodation and flight costs can sometimes be higher due to market fluctuations, the department reaffirmed its commitment to refining its tourism offerings.
“Goa remains dedicated to elevating itself as a prime holiday destination. Many global hospitality brands have established or are planning new ventures here, showcasing confidence in Goa’s growing appeal,” it added.
The department’s response comes on the heels of social media posts critiquing Goa’s public transportation, claiming there is a “taxi mafia” and arguing that lodging options are overpriced. Some travelers suggested that Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam offer better value, raising concerns that Goa’s popularity might be waning.
Contrary to this view, the Department of Tourism pointed out that Goa’s tourism has shown resilience and recovery, with over 8 million (80 lakh) domestic visitors and 450,000 international tourists arriving in 2023.
These numbers exceed pre-pandemic figures, a sign of Goa’s strong standing in the domestic tourism market.
The Tourism Department also emphasized a shift towards sustainable tourism, focusing on “quality over quantity” to ensure that tourism growth benefits the local environment and communities. The department highlighted its commitment to balancing tourism’s impact and prioritizing long-term, community-focused benefits over sheer visitor numbers.
Government data from the Ministry of Tourism shows that while international tourism to Goa dropped sharply during the pandemic—from 934,000 foreign visitors in 2019 to 22,000 in 2021—domestic tourism has rebounded.
Over 7 million domestic tourists visited Goa in 2022, nearly matching pre-COVID levels and reinforcing Goa’s ongoing appeal for Indian travelers.
