Andhra Pradesh pushes for ‘work from home’ in IT to promote women’s employment

Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Feb 11 announced that the state will expand work from home opportunities for women which will empower businesses and employees alike.

In a LinkedIn post, Naidu said, “Andhra Pradesh is planning "Work From Home" in a big way, especially for women.”

Extending his greetings to all the girls and women on the ‘International Day of Women and Girls in Science’, Naidu stressed that the initiative will “foster greater workforce participation, especially of women professionals, who will benefit through flexible remote/hybrid work options.”

“First, I would like to extend greetings to all women and girls in STEM on the International Day of Women and Girls in Science. Today, we celebrate their achievements and commit ourselves to providing them equal and full access to growth opportunities in these fields,” the Andhra Pradesh CM said.

Highlighting the shift in the work landscape during the COVID-19 pandemic, Naidu said, “As we know, the work landscape underwent a shift during the COVID-19 pandemic. With technology readily available to scale, "Work From Home" gained prominence. Concepts such as remote work, coworking spaces (CWS), and Neighborhood Workspaces (NWS) can empower businesses and employees alike to create flexible, productive work environments.”

His comments come at a time of ongoing conversation about work-life balance as prominent industry leaders such as Narayan Murthy and L&T chairman SN Subhramanyan have endorsed working 70-90 hours a week to be successful.

Naidu highlighted that remote work and flexible work hours have become an integral part of modern employment structures.

“Concepts such as remote work, coworking spaces, and Neighborhood Workspaces can empower businesses and employees alike to create flexible, productive work environments,” he wrote.

He also mentioned Andhra Pradesh’s IT & GCC Policy 4.0, saying “It’s a game-changing step in that direction.”

“We're offering incentives for developers to create IT office spaces in every city/town/Mandal and supporting IT/GCC firms to generate employment at the grassroots,” he added.

The post garnered appreciation from many employees with one saying, “As a working woman, mother of twin baby boys, pursuing MS in University of Washington, United States, I can deeply resonate with the need of work life balance, initiatives promoting WFH, NWS truly help to create productive professional working conditions, that help in providing greater flexibility to switch roles from profession to family and vice-versa.”

“This is a groundbreaking initiative that has the potential to redefine the future of work in Andhra Pradesh! By strategically integrating "Work From Home" and hybrid models into the state's economic framework, this policy is not just about convenience—it’s about empowerment, inclusivity, and transformation,” said another user.

In India, there are no formal remote work regulations as opposed to other countries. However, companies do offer such provisions as per employment contracts with government encouraging remote work in certain cases such as maternity leave or situations where job can be done remotely.

Despite the initial rise in work from home during COVID-19, many companies have aggressively implemented return-to-office policies.

Companies have also offered performance pay and appraisals to employees choosing to return to office spaces to prioritize in-office presence over remote work.
