Teen prodigy set to break Sachin Tendulkar’s record as selectors eye Ireland T20I tour.

India could soon witness a record-shattering debut as 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi emerges as a strong contender for the upcoming T20I tour of Ireland in June. If selected, the teenage sensation will become the youngest player to represent the country, surpassing the long-standing benchmark set by Sachin Tendulkar.
Sources indicate that the national selectors have shortlisted Sooryavanshi for the short Ireland series, scheduled just ahead of a white-ball tour of England. “He is in contention, and his name figures among several under consideration,” a senior board official confirmed.

The left-handed batter has taken the ongoing Indian Premier League by storm, producing a string of explosive knocks. His standout performances include a blistering 26-ball 78 against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, a 17-ball 52 versus Chennai Super Kings, and a rapid 14-ball 39 against Mumbai Indians. Unfazed by reputation, he has attacked world-class bowlers, notably dispatching Jasprit Bumrah for a six off the very first ball he faced and taking on Josh Hazlewood with confidence.
Selectors appear keen to fast-track the prodigy’s international exposure, potentially easing him into the setup against relatively less formidable opposition. Should his rich vein of form continue, Sooryavanshi is also likely to feature in India’s tour of Zimbabwe later this year.
Support for the youngster is already building within cricketing circles. Arun Dhumal publicly endorsed his selection, calling him a rare talent deserving of a historic debut. Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan has similarly urged selectors not to delay his inclusion.
Currently, Sachin Tendulkar holds the record as India’s youngest male debutant, having played his first Test at 16 years and 205 days in 1989. Overall, Shafali Verma remains the youngest Indian international, debuting at 15 years, seven months, and 27 days. Sooryavanshi now stands on the verge of eclipsing both milestones.
The Ireland series, featuring two T20Is on June 26 and 28, is expected to see a largely second-string Indian squad, offering opportunities to emerging talents. Senior players are likely to return for the subsequent England tour, which includes five T20Is and three ODIs starting July 1.
Reflecting on his fearless approach, Sooryavanshi has emphasized process over pressure. “I try to play the ball, not the bowler, and focus on my own game,” he said after guiding his team to a six-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru—an attitude that may soon carry him onto the international stage.
