Dismissing the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin on Tuesday termed it as 'divisive and bereft of any use' adding that his government will not implement the new law in the state.

Lashing out at the BJP regime for notifying the rules of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) 'in a haste' just weeks before the announcement of Lok Sabha polls, Stalin said the CAA and its rules went against the basic structure of the Constitution.

"There is not going to be any use or benefits due to the CAA, which only paves the way for creating divisions among the Indian people. The stand of the government is that this law is completely unwarranted; it must be repealed,” he said.

Hence, "the Tamil Nadu government will not give any opportunity in any manner to implement the CAA in Tamil Nadu," he said in an official release. Stalin, also president of the ruling DMK, stressed that the CAA went against pluralism, secularism, minority communities and the Sri Lankan Tamil refugees.

Meanwhile, Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has also expressed her concerns over the implementation of CAA.
Besides calling the law discriminatory, she also showed doubts over the legality of CAA rules.

“This is a game of taking away the existing rights of citizens and is directly linked to the implementation of the NRC in the country," Mamata said on Tuesday.

Earlier, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan also described the CAA as divisive that is causing rifts along the communal lines and affirmed that it will not be put into effect in the southern state.

"The government has repeatedly stated that the Citizenship Amendment Act, which treats Muslim minorities as second-class citizens, will not be implemented in Kerala. That remains the position. All of Kerala will stand united in opposing this communally divisive law," Vijayan said in a statement.

Taking to X, Delhi CM, Arvind Kejriwal wrote, “After ruling the country for 10 years, the Modi government has brought CAA ahead of the (Lok Sabha) elections. At a time when the poor and middle class are groaning due to inflation and unemployed youth are struggling from door to door for employment, instead of solving those real issues, these people have brought CAA."
