With Priyanka Gandhi's election, the Nehru-Gandhi family—Sonia, Rahul, and Priyanka—occupy parliamentary seats for the first time in decades.
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra officially commenced her tenure as a Member of Parliament (MP) in the Lok Sabha on Nov 28.
Her oath-taking ceremony marked a significant milestone as all three key members of the Nehru-Gandhi family — Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi — are now active members of Parliament.
Priyanka was accompanied by her mother Sonia Gandhi to the Parliament, where her brother and Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, and her husband, Robert Vadra, were also present to witness this momentous occasion.
Priyanka secured a decisive victory in the Wayanad bypoll, defeating her rivals with an impressive margin of 4,10,931 votes.
Priyanka Gandhi's win came after the Wayanad Lok Sabha seat was vacated by Rahul Gandhi. Earlier this year, Rahul had contested and won from both Wayanad and Rae Bareli constituencies in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.
Opting to retain Rae Bareli, a family stronghold, Rahul's decision necessitated the Wayanad bypoll, paving the way for Priyanka's debut in electoral politics.
Representing the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), Priyanka faced competition from BJP's Navya Haridas and Sathyan Mokeri of the Communist Party of India (CPI).
Despite a low voter turnout, Priyanka garnered 6,22,338 votes—slightly fewer than Rahul’s tally of 6,47,445 in April. However, her victory margin of 4,10,931 votes eclipsed her brother's lead of 3,64,422, making her debut an extraordinary achievement.
Priyanka's induction into the Lok Sabha alongside Rahul Gandhi marks a rare moment in Indian political history, with their mother, Sonia Gandhi, currently serving as a Rajya Sabha MP representing Rajasthan.
In another significant development for the Congress party, Ravindra Vasantrao Chavan also took the oath as an MP. Chavan secured the Nanded Lok Sabha seat by winning 5,86,788 votes in a bypoll following the passing of his father, Vasantrao Balwantrao Chavan, the former MP.
Priyanka’s debut symbolizes a rejuvenation for the Congress in Wayanad, a constituency that has traditionally been a stronghold for the party. Her resounding victory not only solidifies her position within the party but also reflects the enduring influence of the Nehru-Gandhi legacy in Indian politics.
