Shortly after the oath ceremony at historic Ramlila Maidan was over, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta began work with her top tasks to be completed within the first 100 days figured out.

Her government’s top priorities include the cleaning of the Yamuna River, de-silting of roads and sewers in preparation for the monsoon season, and the rollout of the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme in Delhi, and the removal of garbage from Delhi's streets and corners, as well as road repairs, a senior BJP leader said.

These issues are likely to be discussed at the first meeting of the new cabinet on Feb 20, he added.

According to him, Gupta and her team of MLAs and ministers have been tasked to ensure that public works are done on priority and it is ensured ensure people realize the difference from how AAP ran the government for over a decade

The new government should ensure that the people of Delhi must experience a change in the ground situation, he added.

Earlier hours before taking oath as CM, Gupta, the first-time MLA from Shalimar Bagh, vowed to fulfill the commitments the BJP made to the people of the Capital ahead of the Assembly polls.

She said Delhi will see a new chapter of development under the BJP and Delhiites will be getting what they deserve in the next five years.

Expressing gratitude to PM Modi and the party leadership for providing her the opportunity, Gupta said she will continue working with utmost honesty and under her leadership, all the promises made by the party will be fulfilled at the earliest.

“This is nothing but PM Modi’s vision of development led by the women of the country. He gave a chance to a regular girl of a regular family. It’s a big moment for all the women of the country.” Gupta told a national daily in a brief interview.

“My priorities will be fulfilling the commitment we have made to Delhi and working on the vision of PM Modi. Our team of 48 MLAs will be working towards that.” she added.

To a question, Gupta (50) who succeeded Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP's) Atishi said whatever schemes have been started for women by PM Modi will be implemented for the benefit of the people.

PM Modi congratulated Gupta and six members of her cabinet on taking oath.

Political acumen won Gupta the top post

Born in Haryana's Jind and a lawyer by profession, Gupta cut her teeth in politics with the RSS-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).

She hails from the Baniya community, which has been the BJP's traditional voter bank, even when Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) nearly swept the 2015 and 2020 Delhi elections.

She went on to become the president of Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) in 1996-1997. Her electoral journey started as a councilor from Pitampura North in 2007. She was elected to the municipal council two more times.

Despite facing defeats in the Delhi Assembly elections in 2015 and 2020, her political acumen did not go unnoticed as she served as the general secretary of the BJP Mahila Morcha in Delhi and as a member of the party’s national executive committee.

Notably, she is the only woman Chief Minister among the sitting BJP chief ministers.

'Viksit Delhi' pledge

Shortly before the swearing-in ceremony, BJP minister Ashish Sood reiterated the party's aim of making a 'Viksit Delhi' with a BJP government at the helm in the national capital.

His remarks come amidst the BJP repeatedly raising the issue of corruption by AAP.

BJP won 48 seats out of 70 seats, while AAP could win only 22 seats in the recently held assembly polls. Congress miserably failed to open its account in the third successive election.
