West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on April 8 filed her nomination papers from the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency, formally entering the electoral contest in a seat considered crucial for her party.
Accompanied by senior leaders of the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Banerjee submitted her nomination at the designated office amid tight security and the presence of party workers. The filing marks a key moment in the ongoing Assembly election process in the state.

Bhabanipur, located in south Kolkata, has been a stronghold of the TMC and holds particular political significance for Banerjee. She has represented the constituency in the past and is seeking to retain it as part of the current electoral contest.
Speaking after filing her nomination, Banerjee expressed confidence in securing victory from the seat and reiterated her party’s commitment to development and welfare initiatives in the state.
The nomination filing also signals the beginning of intensified campaigning in Bhabanipur, which is expected to witness a closely watched contest. Opposition parties have also fielded candidates in the constituency, setting up a direct electoral challenge.
Election officials confirmed that the nomination process was conducted in accordance with guidelines, with scrutiny of papers to follow as per the schedule set by the Election Commission.
The Assembly elections in West Bengal are being conducted in phases, with political parties stepping up their campaigns across constituencies. Bhabanipur is among the seats drawing significant attention due to Banerjee’s candidature.
Leaders from opposition parties have criticised the TMC government on various issues, including governance and law and order, while the ruling party has highlighted its welfare schemes and development projects.
The filing of nomination papers is a formal step in the electoral process, after which candidates engage in full-scale campaigning until polling day. The outcome in Bhabanipur is expected to be closely watched, given its political importance and the stature of the candidate.
As campaigning progresses, both the TMC and opposition parties are expected to focus heavily on the constituency, with rallies, public meetings, and outreach programmes planned in the coming days.
The Election Commission will complete scrutiny and finalise the list of candidates after the nomination process concludes. Polling dates for the constituency are part of the broader Assembly election schedule.
