Although the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has won the 2024 Lok Sabha Elections, Indian voters have handed Narendra Modi an unprecedented setback. For the first time in a decade, the Hindu nationalist BJP has failed to form a majority in the lower house of the Parliament on its own, with the Congress-led INDIA bloc launching a surprise attack to hault the ruling coalition's march towards 300 seats—a far cry from its 400-seat target.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Damodardas Modi is now ready to form the government as he gets set to embark on his third term at the helm of the world's largest democracy.
Modi is set for a record-equaling third consecutive term after 642 million Indian votes were counted, ensuring his leadership despite a notable shift in the country's political dynamics.
Even though the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a majority in the Lok Sabha, the saffron party faced significant losses in key Hindi heartland states, necessitating a coalition with allies like the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and Janata Dal-United (JDU) to form the government.
This election marked a resurgence for the opposition, particularly the Indian National Congress party under Rahul Gandhi and the Akhilesh Yadav-led Samajwadi Party (SP) in Uttar Pradesh, signaling a stronger opposition presence.
The BJP won 240 seats, short of the 272 majority mark, and will rely on allies in the NDA to form the government. In 2019 and 2014, BJP won 303 and 282 seats respectively, securing a majority on its own.
With support from allies like N Chandrababu Naidu's TDP and Nitish Kumar's JDU, winning 16 and 12 seats respectively, the NDA crossed the halfway mark of 291 seats in the 543-member Lok Sabha. The TDP also won the Andhra Pradesh assembly elections.
In an address to his party workers on June 4, 73-year-old Modi pledged to work with all states to build a developed India. He aims to focus on completely rooting out corruption in his third term.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge called the results a "victory of the people and democracy," noting it as a moral defeat for Modi, who campaigned in his own name.
The NDA did not achieve the landslide victory predicted by exit polls, which had forecast at least 350 seats for the ruling coalition.
The Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress Party (TMC), another key opposition ally, won 29 seats in West Bengal, while BJP's numbers fell to 12 from 18. In Uttar Pradesh, BJP's seats dropped to 33 from 62, while the SP increased its seats to 37, benefiting from Muslim vote consolidation and dissatisfaction with the BJP government.
Modi retained his Varanasi seat but with a reduced margin. Rahul Gandhi won seats in Kerala and UP by large margins.
Notably, the BJP's election campaign, from April 19 to June 1, saw heavy reliance on Modi and divisive issues.
The results contradicted BJP's expectations in the southern states, with no seats in Tamil Nadu and losses in Karnataka. However, the BJP did make inroads in Kerala and Telangana, winning seats for the first time.
In Andhra Pradesh, BJP ally TDP won 16 seats, with BJP bagging three seats. BJP faced upsets in the north, including losses in Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Haryana, but performed well in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand.

The votes are in, done and dusted
It took 18 gruelling hours to count 642 million votes. And the results are nothing like what the exit polls predicted.
BJP-led NDA has won 291 seats, far lower than the 350+ seats forecast.
Congress-led INDIA bloc has grabbed 232 Lok Sabha seats. Exit polls had predicted about 150 for them.
So, for the next five years, you can expect some healthy debate in the lower house of the Parliament.
The Indian political landscape has changed, and no more is it a one-sided affair like before.

BJP Falls Short of Majority Mark by 30 Seats, NDA Set to Return to Power
After more than 14 hours of counting, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is poised to secure a third consecutive term with 292 seats. The INDIA bloc, which defied all exit polls, is now aiming for 232 seats.
While the BJP has won or is leading in 240 seats out of the total 292, it remains well below the majority mark of 272 needed to become the single largest party in Parliament. However, with support from the TDP and JD(U), the BJP-led alliance will maintain its strength and stability at the Center.

Hate politics, false promises led to decline in BJP's performance in LS polls: Owaisi
AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi said the BJP's performance below its expectations in the Lok Sabha polls was the outcome of the saffron party's hate politics during the last 10 years and the false promises it allegedly made to the people.
Owaisi, who won the Hyderabad Lok Sabha constituency for a fifth consecutive term, said he will extend support, if necessary, in the event of Narendra Modi not becoming the prime minister for the third term.
"We have publicly taken a stand that we will stop BJP," he told reporters here.
He claimed that the people were fed up with the BJP's politics of hatred and the youth were disappointed with unemployment in the country and that the farmers were also upset. Those who love the Constitution felt that Modi's call for '400 paar' (more than 400 LS seats) was brought forward to "finish" the Constitution, he maintained.
"The verdict has come, and if Modi ji forms the government now, then he has to come to the Parliament with the support of allies. It will be a good scene to watch," he said and added that Modi should introspect on the results.

Setback for former CMs Omar Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti as both lose LS polls
The defeat in Lok Sabha polls has come as a setback for the political careers of former chief ministers Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti in view of their vows not to contest the upcoming assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir till it remains a Union Territory.
While Abdullah was defeated by former MLA and terror-funding accused Sheikh Abdul Rashid by a margin of nearly two lakh votes in Baramulla Lok Sabha seat, Mufti was trounced by Gujjar leader and National Conference (NC) candidate Mian Altaf Ahmad by nearly three lakh votes in Anatnag-Rajouri seat.
"I have made it abundantly clear that in the current situation that J-K finds itself in, I am not contesting the assembly elections," the 54-year-old Abdullah told PTI in an interview in April this year, adding that he had been saying this since 2020 and his position had not changed.
"I am never going to participate in assembly election as long as Article 370 is not restored. Whenever I took oath as a member assembly, it was under two Constitutions – J&K Constitution and the Constitution of India - with two flags at the same time. Maybe it is foolish on my part but it is more of an emotional issue for me," Mufti said in an interview with PTI last year.

Congress party presser: ‘Results are slap in Modi's face’
Rahul Gandhi:
“These elections were not about contesting against a party, but fighting against all the tough challenges that came across us like ED, CBI and the media. They tried their best to stop us – got us jailed, froze our bank accounts, and tried to break the party. We believe in the citizens of this country. You all have taken the first step to save the democracy.
We respect the partners of the INDI Alliance, who fought in collaboration peacefully. This is the best performance of the Alliance.
The people can directly relate the stocks of (Gautam) Adani to Modi Ji, and the results are proof that people directly said we don't want Narendra Modi and Amit Shah to run this country. I'm extremely proud of citizens of this country. The poorest people, adivasi, farmers, and Dalits have saved this democracy. I want to thank all of them. The Congress party is with you and we'll fulfil all the promises we made.”
When asked whether there was any chance of the INDIA bloc forming the government, Rahul Gandhi said, “We'll be having the meeting of the Alliance tomorrow, we'll decide with all the partners. I've won from both the seats as the public wants me to serve.”
Mallikarjun Kharge, Congress President:
“These results are result of the people of India and it's their win for democracy. We respect their choice. This mandate is against Narendra Modi, the man. This is his defeat as he was the face of the BJP. They were banking on his name for votes. It's a big loss for them.
All the government agencies like ED and CBI tried their best to stop our campaign, but we are standing here with a successful comeback story today. This will be remembered for a long time.
