The venture-backed program will accept IIT Madras researchers, academic founders and external entrepreneurs, offering a structured pathway from early-stage ideas through market validation, funding and potential spin-outs.

The Wadhwani School of Data Science and AI (WSAI) at IIT Madras is set to launch AI Studio, a venture-backed program designed to help researchers and entrepreneurs turn AI, machine learning and data science ideas into startups.
The inaugural application cycle will open on Oct 3, 2026. The program will accept applications from IIT Madras and WSAI researchers, academic founders from other institutions, as well as external entrepreneurs with an AI, ML or data science concept or an existing early-stage venture.

AI Studio will guide selected teams through the process of developing research or early business ideas into viable companies.
The support will cover product development, market validation, customer demand assessment and preparation for fundraising before potential incorporation into the IIT Madras incubation ecosystem.
How the program will work
Applicants will initially participate in a training phase and bootcamp designed for a broader pool of candidates. Following this stage, a smaller group of ventures will be chosen to participate in the complete AI Studio program.
Selected ventures will enter a six-month development and evaluation period. IIT Madras can extend the program by up to three months for ventures making progress toward an institutional funding round.
AI Studio will operate two cohorts annually, with application cycles scheduled during the winter and spring.
Support for AI and data science startups
Founders selected for the program will receive access to seed funding, cloud and computing credits, research laboratories, data and other research resources. The program will also provide mentoring and entrepreneurship training.
Teams will receive guidance from an Entrepreneur-in-Residence, along with faculty members and domain specialists.
The support will be tailored to different stages of startup development, from building the underlying technology to testing the commercial potential of a product.
Founders will also evaluate whether their products address genuine market needs and whether prospective customers are willing to adopt them.
Ventures that successfully progress through the program can move toward formal spin-outs within the IIT Madras Incubation Cell ecosystem.
Access to WSAI research infrastructure
AI Studio will give participating founders access to WSAI's research laboratories and resources. The arrangement is intended to encourage closer collaboration between entrepreneurs and researchers while allowing startups to use IIT Madras' existing research capabilities.
The initiative forms part of IIT Madras' broader deep-tech incubation ecosystem. According to the institute, its incubation network has supported hundreds of deep-tech startups that together have a valuation of $8 billion and have generated more than 11,000 direct jobs.
With AI Studio, IIT Madras is creating a dedicated pathway for translating AI, ML and data science research into commercial ventures, taking ideas from early research through product development, market validation and fundraising toward potential company formation.
