A defense official said since the operation is taking place close to a river, a Russian made BMP-2 combat vehicle is being used to enhance the capability of the troops to eliminate two more terrorists.
Terrorists targeted an Indian Army vehicle – part of a convoy – in Jammu's Akhnoor area on Oct 28 morning, leading to a gunfight in which one terrorist has been killed so far, the army said.
The anti-terror operation is underway close to a river in the Battal area to eliminate two more terrorists believed to be hiding there, it said.
“The body of one terrorist along with a weapon has been recovered. Operation is in progress.” Army’s Nagrota-headquartered White Knight Corps said in a post on X.
“The area has been cordoned off, and a search operation to neutralize the terrorists is ongoing,” the Corps said in a post earlier in the day.
A defense official was quoted as saying a Russian-made BMP-2 combat vehicle (an amphibious infantry combat vehicle) with night vision technology was deployed in the operation. “Since the operation is taking place close to a river, the BMP-2 vehicle was being used to enhance the capability of the troops,” he said.
The terrorists targeted an army ambulance in a densely forested Battal area of the district around 6.30 a.m, and fled in the face of retaliation by the troops, a police officer said. The ambulance suffered extensive damage in the firing.
Soon army's elite para forces and the National Security Guards (NSG) were mobilized to eliminate the terrorists. There deafening explosions and intense gunfire rocked the area around 3 p.m, the police officer said, adding, a helicopter was also pressed into service for surveillance.
Encounter in Akhoor comes a few days after back-to-back terror attacks in Kashmir’ Ganderbal and Baramulla districts. At least nine civilians and three soldiers were killed in these recent attacks.
