At the Statue of Unity, Modi pays floral tribute to India’s Iron Man, pledges to uphold his vision of a strong and united Bharat.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 31 led the nation in commemorating the 150th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel — the architect of India’s unity — at the towering Statue of Unity in Gujarat’s Narmada district.
The occasion, observed as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day), celebrated the enduring legacy of the country’s first Home Minister, who welded over 550 princely states into one nation.

Arriving early at the 182-metre monument in Ekta Nagar, Modi offered floral tributes and prayers before administering the National Unity Pledge to reaffirm India’s collective resolve toward national integrity.
“After Independence, Sardar Patel accomplished the seemingly impossible task of uniting the nation,” Modi said. “For him, the vision of Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat was paramount — and we will uphold that vision. Every citizen must reject any thought or action that weakens our unity.”
The Ekta Diwas Samaroh unfolded as a vibrant display of discipline and diversity — from a women-led Guard of Honour and flag march to martial arts showcases, NCC performances, and a breathtaking Indian Air Force air show.
State tableaux, school bands, and cultural performances underscored the spirit of unity in diversity that Sardar Patel envisioned.
In a post on X earlier in the day, the Prime Minister hailed Patel as “the driving force behind India’s integration,” whose ideals of integrity, governance, and service “continue to inspire generations.”
On the eve of the event, Modi met members of Sardar Patel’s family in Ekta Nagar including his grandson Gautam Patel and great-grandchildren recalling the monumental contribution of the Iron Man whose legacy, he said, “continues to guide India’s destiny.”
