25-year-old Kamal Dhyani’s late-night ride ended in tragedy after he allegedly plunged into an uncovered pit dug for utility work, sparking outrage and a probe.

A late-night ride home turned fatal for 25-year-old biker Kamal Dhyani, whose body was found inside a 15-foot-deep open pit in west Delhi’s Janakpuri on February 6 morning, hours after he spoke to a friend and said he was just 15 minutes away from home.
Kamal, a resident of Kailashpuri, had left his office in Rohini on February 5 night but never made it back. When repeated calls to his phone went unanswered, his family and friends began searching for him through the night, with police teams also involved.

There was, however, no trace of him until around 8 am on Friday, when a woman alerted the police about a body lying inside a deep pit in the area.
Police personnel rushed to the spot and found Kamal’s body inside the pit, with his motorcycle lying toppled nearby. Preliminary investigations suggest that he died after falling into the open excavation, reportedly dug for Delhi Jal Board (DJB) work.
A close friend told ANI that the two had last spoken at around 11:30 pm. “He said he had reached the District Centre and would take about 15 minutes to reach home. After half an hour, we called him nearly 10 times, but there was no response. We got worried and went out looking for him, but couldn’t find him,” he said.
The friend further alleged lapses by the police, claiming that when Kamal went missing, the family approached the Janakpuri Police Station to register an FIR but were told it could only be filed after 24 hours. “We requested them to trace his phone while it was still ringing. They found the location and sent it to us, but later deleted it, saying it was confidential,” he alleged.
Kamal’s mother, overwhelmed with grief, said the family was shattered by the news. “Someone picked up his phone in the morning and told us he had fallen into a pit. He had told me just a day earlier that he had the next day off and we would celebrate our anniversary. He had bought things for the celebration, but never returned. All we want is justice,” she said.
Delhi Police, however, rejected allegations of inaction, stating that officers remained with the family throughout the night and made sustained efforts to trace Kamal’s location using mobile tower data and CCTV footage.
The incident has sparked public outrage and prompted a response from the Delhi government. Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Verma termed the death “tragic” and announced strict action against those responsible.
“We have ordered an inquiry from the Delhi Jal Board. A committee comprising director-level officers has been formed, and the report will be submitted within 24 hours. Three officers have been suspended, and the strictest possible action will be taken against the company working at the site,” Verma said.
An official inquiry by the Delhi Jal Board is underway, with further action expected as investigations continue into the circumstances that led to Kamal’s death and the safety lapses at the excavation site.
