AUSTRIA

Western Australia is examining a possible merger of three of its major universities, with a government-commissioned business case expected to shape the next steps in the proposal.

The assessment will consider combining Curtin University, Murdoch University and the University of Western Australia (UWA). Work is scheduled to begin in late 2026 and conclude in 2027, after which the government will decide how to proceed. No merger has been finalised.

Govt to assess costs and academic impact

The proposed assessment will examine the potential costs of a merger, the institutions’ long-term financial sustainability, research capacity and the impact on students. A 12-member steering committee will advise the process.

However, the proposal has already drawn opposition from Curtin University, which publicly rejected a forced merger on October 11. The university cited concerns over financial costs, disruption and reduced student choice.

Reporting by The PIE has highlighted the differing positions, underscoring the debate over whether a merger would strengthen the university sector or create significant challenges for the institutions involved.

What the proposal means for international applicants

For students in Taiwan and other international applicants considering these universities, the immediate message is that existing academic arrangements remain unchanged.

The Western Australian government’s frequently asked questions state that the business case will not affect current degrees or courses, which will continue as normal while the assessment proceeds.

Until formal decisions are announced, applicants should not assume that university names, degree certificates, admission requirements or other academic arrangements will change.

Students planning to apply or pay tuition fees should rely on the formal offer issued by their chosen university. They should also retain dated records of course details, campus locations and tuition fees, and monitor official announcements as the government’s assessment progresses in 2027.
