Landmark collaboration with Maharashtra government to bring UK degrees and cutting-edge programs to Indian students.

In a bold move reflecting the growing globalization of higher education, the University of York has unveiled plans to open a new international campus in Mumbai, India, with operations expected to begin by the 2026/27 academic year.
The UK-based institution has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Chief Minister of Maharashtra, laying the foundation for a significant new venture in South Asia’s financial capital. The announcement follows a high-level meeting between University of York Vice-Chancellor Professor Charlie Jeffery and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

“This is a really exciting venture,” said Prof. Jeffery. “India is driving forward with global ambition, skills development and economic growth. We’re proud to support that journey by educating the next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs.”
The upcoming Mumbai campus will initially operate from an existing facility in one of the city’s bustling business districts. Over time, a full-fledged university complex is expected to take shape. The institution plans to offer a selection of undergraduate and postgraduate programs from the outset, with a strong focus on future-forward disciplines such as computer science (with specializations in artificial intelligence and cybersecurity), business, economics, and the creative industries.
Pending final regulatory approval from India’s University Grants Commission, the campus will enable students to study entirely in India while following the same rigorous academic curriculum taught in York. Graduates will receive University of York degrees, ensuring global academic recognition.
Indian Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis welcomed the initiative: “It is a privilege to welcome the University of York to Mumbai as we expand world-class educational opportunities in India.”
The move aligns with India’s National Education Policy, which encourages the entry of top-tier foreign institutions to strengthen the country’s education ecosystem and meet growing domestic demand. For the University of York, it marks a strategic leap into one of the world’s most dynamic higher education markets.
