Leading Scotland's Fight Against Climate Change: The University of Glasgow is set to lead Scotland, which spoke of a groundbreaking £5 million initiative aimed at accelerating and enhancing the UK's preparedness for the impacts of climate change. This new hub, named the Maximising UK Adaptation to Climate Change (MACC), is spearheaded by King’s College London and is funded by UK Research & Innovation (UKRI) and the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra).

Tackling Climate Change Barriers

The MACC hub seeks to address significant barriers such as public awareness, policy, legislation, and climate data that currently hinder the UK’s ability to adapt to climate change. The hub aims to inform a comprehensive national climate change adaptation plan, emphasizing ‘transformational adaptation’—actions that drive positive change, especially for the most vulnerable and marginalized communities.

Collaborative Effort Across the UK

Over the next three years, eight universities and five climate partnership organizations will collaborate within the MACC hub. A notable feature of the hub is a £750,000 flexible fund dedicated to accelerating community-based adaptation activities. The hub’s activities will be managed through regional centers, each focusing on different barriers to climate adaptation. The central operations, including a Hub Secretariat and Policy Response Unit, will be based at King’s College London.

University of Glasgow's Role

Professor Jaime Toney, director of the University of Glasgow’s Centre for Sustainable Solutions, will lead the University's contribution to the MACC hub. Partnering with Sniffer, a Scottish climate resilience organization, the University will conduct place-based activities in Scotland, enhance understanding of systems complexity, and develop systems thinking capabilities for transformative adaptation outcomes.

Building on Existing Initiatives

Professor Toney highlighted the synergy between the MACC hub and the University’s existing £10.5 million Glasgow as a Living Lab Accelerating Novel Transformation (GALLANT) research program. “The whole-system approach to urban environmental and wellbeing challenges we’re developing in GALLANT will help inform our contributions to the MACC hub and exchange learning across all four nations in the UK,” she said.

National Vision for Climate Adaptation

Dr Helen Adams of King’s College London, the MACC hub leader, emphasized the initiative's importance. “Climate change will have huge impacts on our planet in the coming years, and this hub will help us take the necessary steps to adapt. By bringing together expertise from across the UK, we can ensure a clear vision for the future and fully consider those most vulnerable to climate change.”

Supporting a Green Future

A UKRI spokesperson underscored the hub's significance within the "Building a Green Future" initiative. “This hub is supported by one of five UKRI-wide initiatives to tackle large-scale, complex challenges. We aim to accelerate the green economy by supporting research and innovation that deliver on national priorities and help achieve net zero in the UK by 2050.”

The MACC hub represents a significant step forward in the UK’s efforts to adapt to the inevitable impacts of climate change, ensuring a resilient and sustainable future for all. For additional news from leading universities around the globe, visit Education Post News.
