Union education minister announces road safety to be included in school curriculum

Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced that road safety will soon become a formal part of the school curriculum.

“NCERT is working on new textbooks and learning materials focused on road safety for all classes—from Class 1 to Class 12,” Pradhan said.

He emphasized the scale and impact of this initiative, saying, “With 30 crore students across the country, their role in shaping a road-safe India is critical. They must understand the fundamentals of road safety from an early age.”

Pradhan also reiterated the government’s commitment to transforming road safety into a mass movement.

“As Prime Minister Narendra Modi believes, road safety should be a people’s movement—and we are working toward making that a reality,” said Pradhan.

The announcement was made during the launch of the 'Surakshit Safar' road safety learning module at Kendriya Vidyalaya 2 on April 22.

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, also spoke at the event, emphasizing the importance of involving students in building a socially aware and responsible generation.

“The central government is taking major steps to reduce pollution and road accidents, especially in the capital. But to truly make a difference, students like you must show awareness and social responsibility,” said Gadkari.

He also highlighted the country’s shift toward clean energy, saying, “The future belongs to hydrogen. We should strive to become an energy-exporting nation rather than an importer.”

Gadkari urged students to take active steps in combating pollution and preventing road accidents, underscoring their vital role in creating a safer, cleaner India.

Prashant K Banerjee, Executive Director of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), added that road safety continues to be a major hurdle in India's development.

He called for a generational change to ensure long-term improvements.
