Emphasizing the strategic significance of the relationship, Modi during his visit to Jeddah described Saudi Arabia as a "maritime neighbor, a trusted friend, and a strategic ally" with enough potential for future collaboration.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his two-day visit to Saudi Arabia, lauded the Kingdom as "one of India's most valued partners." En route to Jeddah on April 20, Modi emphasized the strategic significance of the relationship, describing Saudi Arabia as a "maritime neighbor, a trusted friend, and a strategic ally" with "limitless potential" for future collaboration.
As part of the special ceremonial welcome, Modi’s aircraft was escorted by the F-15s of the Royal Saudi Air Force, a gesture reflecting the high regard for the visit.
Modi is set to meet Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, with talks expected to focus on expanding cooperation across vital sectors, including energy, defense, trade, and accelerating Saudi Arabia's $100 billion investment plan for India.
"This is my third visit to Saudi Arabia in the past decade and the first to Jeddah, a city of deep historical ties with India," Modi remarked ahead of the meeting.
"I look forward to strengthening the enduring partnership that was further solidified during Prince Mohammed bin Salman's successful State visit to India in 2023."
In an interview with Arab News, Modi reflected on the centuries-old ties between the two nations, rooted in civilizational exchanges and mutual respect. He highlighted the formation of the Strategic Partnership Council in 2019 as a key milestone, noting, "This is just the beginning. Our partnership has limitless potential."
Underpinning the relationship is "mutual trust and goodwill," according to Modi, who acknowledged the vital role Saudi leadership plays in strengthening the alliance. Modi also praised Prince Salman’s visionary leadership, which has ushered in significant social and economic transformations within Saudi Arabia.
Focusing on the economic relationship, Modi described trade ties as "as old as the monsoon winds," citing the complementary nature of the economies and how both nations have continued to expand trade despite global challenges. Key areas of commerce, such as energy, agriculture, and fertilizers, remain strong, with new sectors such as space, healthcare, and the "blue economy" seeing growing interest from both sides.
Modi also addressed future economic collaboration, underscoring opportunities for Saudi businesses to invest in India’s infrastructure, renewable energy, and technological sectors as part of India’s "Viksit Bharat 2047" vision. Similarly, the growing defense and security cooperation, especially in counterterrorism, reflects the solid trust between the two countries.
Modi further highlighted the progress of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor project, a landmark initiative aimed at enhancing regional connectivity, trade, and economic integration, with Saudi Arabia playing a crucial role. "This corridor will define the future of commerce and connectivity for generations," Modi asserted, envisioning it as the 21st-century Silk Route.
In recognition of the vibrant Indian community in Saudi Arabia, numbering 2.7 million, Modi expressed his deep gratitude for the Kingdom's support during the pandemic and praised the community's contribution to the economic prosperity of Saudi Arabia. He emphasized the "4Cs" of India’s engagement with its diaspora — Care, Connect, Celebrate, and Contribute — and reiterated the importance of ensuring the well-being of Indian nationals abroad.
Cultural exchanges also remain a cornerstone of the bilateral relationship, with Modi noting the growing popularity of Indian culture in Saudi Arabia, including the practice of yoga, the interest in cricket, and the demand for Indian entertainment content. As part of his visit, he invited Saudi participation in India’s World Audio-Visual and Entertainment Summit, scheduled for May.
As India and Saudi Arabia chart a course towards deeper cooperation in all aspects — from defense and trade to culture and regional stability — Modi’s visit underscores a future-oriented partnership that holds transformative potential for both nations and the broader global landscape.
