The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has developed an introductory module on Computational Thinking (CT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) for students in Classes 9 to 12. Announced on October 23, 2026, the resource aims to familiarise students with AI while strengthening critical thinking, creativity and systematic problem-solving skills.

The initiative aligns with the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and is designed for learners who have no prior knowledge of artificial intelligence. NCERT has made the module available through its official website. https://ncert.nic.in/textbook-ai-ct.php?ln=hi
The new module emphasises experiential learning instead of relying solely on theoretical explanations. It incorporates classroom discussions, practical exercises, experimentation and reflection to help students understand computational thinking and AI concepts.

Students will be introduced to computational thinking as a structured approach to identifying problems and developing solutions. The learning resource also explains how AI systems work, where they are used in everyday life, and what their capabilities and limitations are.
An important feature is that activities can be conducted with or without digital devices. This approach is intended to support participation in schools with different levels of technological infrastructure.
Responsible technology use is a major component of the NCERT module. Students will learn about data privacy, fairness, digital safety and the risks associated with misinformation.
The resource also encourages learners to verify AI-generated information rather than accepting it without scrutiny. By understanding the limitations of AI systems, students can develop a more critical approach to digital content and emerging technologies.
The module further stresses that artificial intelligence should support the learning process rather than replace independent thinking. Human judgement, creativity and ethical responsibility will remain central to students' learning and decision-making.
The introduction of computational thinking and AI learning resources reflects the broader push to strengthen technology awareness and problem-solving abilities in school education.
In an August 2026 response published by the Press Information Bureau, the Ministry of Education stated that the curriculum for Classes 9 to 12 in AI and allied subjects had been finalised. The government also highlighted the importance of logical reasoning, pattern recognition, algorithm design, data literacy and responsible AI use.
NCERT's introductory resource is part of this wider effort to familiarise school students with emerging technologies and prepare them to use digital tools thoughtfully.
Students, parents and teachers can access the introductory AI and computational thinking module through the official NCERT website.
