School building amid heavy rain and Cyclone Arnab weather alerts in India

Schools in several districts of Jharkhand and Andhra Pradesh, along with educational institutions in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, are reported to be closed on Thursday, October 29, as authorities respond to adverse weather conditions associated with Cyclone Arnab.

The precautionary measures follow forecasts of heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds in affected regions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued weather warnings, while government agencies have been coordinating preparedness and emergency-response arrangements.

According to a report published by Careers360 on October 29, the closures cover selected districts rather than entire states. Students and parents should confirm the status of classes with their respective schools and district administrations before travelling.

Schools closed today: District-wise list
Jharkhand

Schools in the following four districts have been reported closed on October 29:

Ranchi: Government, government-aided and private schools have suspended academic activities for Classes KG to 12 under the reported district order.

East Singhbhum: Schools remain closed under the reported district administration order.

West Singhbhum: Educational institutions are covered by the reported closure.

Simdega: Schools have been directed to remain closed amid the weather alert.

The reported orders cover October 28 and 29. The closures follow rainfall in parts of the state and warnings of further precipitation linked to the cyclone. The IMD has issued rainfall alerts for several Jharkhand districts, prompting authorities to take precautionary steps.

Andhra Pradesh

School closures have also been reported in three districts of Andhra Pradesh for October 29.

West Godavari: Schools and anganwadi centres have reportedly been ordered to remain closed.

Visakhapatnam: Government and private schools have reportedly suspended classes.

Krishna: Schools have reportedly been closed because of the prevailing weather conditions.

The extent of the closures may differ by district and institution. Parents should check the latest district-level notices for confirmation of the applicable dates and any instructions regarding examinations or other academic activities.

Chhattisgarh

Raipur: Schools and colleges in Raipur have been reported closed on October 29 amid forecasts of heavy rainfall and gusty winds.

The district administration has reportedly directed relevant departments, including police, health, revenue, local-body and electricity officials, to remain prepared for weather-related emergencies. Disaster-response and fire-service teams have also been placed on alert.

Students in other Chhattisgarh districts should not assume that the Raipur closure applies statewide. They should follow announcements issued by their local administrations and educational institutions.

What has the IMD said about Cyclone Arnab?

The IMD tracked Cyclone Arnab as it approached the Andhra Pradesh coast. In a government briefing published on October 26, the Press Information Bureau reported that the cyclone was expected to cross the coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam on October 28 as a very severe cyclonic storm.

The briefing also highlighted the possibility of impacts in Telangana, southern Odisha, southern and central Chhattisgarh, eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. State governments and disaster-management agencies were asked to strengthen preparedness, with emergency teams kept on standby.

The IMD subsequently reported that the system was over coastal Andhra Pradesh and adjoining areas on October 28 and was expected to weaken gradually.

These weather warnings provide the context for the school-closure decisions. However, an IMD weather alert does not automatically mean that every school in a warned district is closed; the applicable district or state order determines the closure.

Are schools closed in Odisha today?

School closures were reported in parts of Odisha on October 28, including districts affected by the cyclone. However, the latest Careers360 report said that a fresh closure announcement for October 29 had not been confirmed at the time of publication.

Parents and students should check the latest instructions from the Odisha government or their district administration before deciding whether to attend school.

What should students and parents do?

Students and parents should take the following steps before travelling to school:

Check official district administration announcements and school notices.

Confirm whether the closure applies to government schools, private schools, colleges or anganwadi centres.

Verify examination schedules and any revised dates directly with the institution.

Follow local weather advisories and avoid flooded roads or areas affected by strong winds.
