Police have arrested seven people, including a school principal, for allegedly taking Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 from NIOS candidates in exchange for facilitating cheating during examinations.

Seven people, including a school principal, have been arrested in Assam's Tinsukia district for their alleged involvement in examination malpractice during the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) examinations. According to police, the accused allegedly collected money from candidates by promising to help them pass the examinations through unfair means.
The candidates were reportedly charged between Rs 15,000 and Rs 25,000 at different examination centres in the district. Police alleged that students who paid the money were allowed to use unfair practices and received assistance during the examinations.

The alleged examination fraud came to light following a surprise inspection conducted by a police team at Bhawati Bhagwan DV Shiksha Niketan on Thursday. The operation was led by Purunjay Bora, Officer-in-Charge of Sadar Police Station.During the raid, police detected suspected irregularities and arrested seven individuals, including the school's principal, Raghav Prasad Rai.
Apart from the school principal, the six other arrested individuals have been identified as Sunil Kumar Verma, Ajit Jain, Biki Prasad, Dipu Barman, Suresh Giri and Shubhnath Bhagat.Police registered an FIR in connection with the alleged examination malpractice. All seven accused were produced before a court on Friday and subsequently taken into custody for questioning and further investigation.
The investigation is focused on establishing the extent of the alleged financial transactions and identifying whether other individuals were involved in facilitating the malpractice.
Police are also examining whether the alleged irregularities were restricted to Bhawati Bhagwan DV Shiksha Niketan or whether similar practices were being carried out at other NIOS examination centres across Tinsukia district.
Investigators are looking into the amount allegedly collected from candidates, the possible involvement of additional persons and the wider network, if any, behind the suspected examination racket. The investigation is ongoing, and the allegations against the arrested individuals have not yet been established by a court. Further details are expected as the police inquiry progresses.
