Odisha to develop 800 schools as model institutions under PM SHRI scheme

Odisha will upgrade around 800 schools into model institutions under the PM Schools for Rising India scheme, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi said on April 12.

Speaking at an event in Keonjhar district, he said the selected schools will be equipped with improved infrastructure, digital learning facilities, smart classrooms, and modern teaching practices as part of the centrally sponsored initiative.

Emphasizing the broader role of education, the chief minister said it should go beyond employment outcomes. "In today's competitive era, along with academic knowledge, skills, creativity, and new ideas are essential," he said.

He also praised the host school’s approach, noting that it focuses not only on academic content but also on ethics, discipline, and values.

Highlighting budgetary support, Majhi said over ₹31,997 crore has been allocated to the school and mass education department for 2026 to 2027.

He added that about 20,000 teachers have been recruited over the past one and a half years, with plans underway to appoint another 45,000 educators.

The state is also working to establish Godabarish Mishra Adarsh Primary Schools in every panchayat, he said.

The PM SHRI scheme, launched by the central government, aims to create well-equipped schools that provide a safe and engaging learning environment supported by quality infrastructure and resources.

It is aligned with the goals of the National Education Policy 2020, focusing on developing students into active, responsible citizens in an inclusive and equitable society.
