NIT Trichy, in collaboration with Illinois Institute of Technology, will launch the online program in July 2025 which will focus on emerging technologies including quantum computing, gen AI and machine learning.

NIT Trichy to establish research and innovation hub to foster global entrepreneurship

NIT Trichy unveils the establishment of a research and innovation hub to foster an entrepreneurial environment on campus at a cost of ₹150 crore.

“We have allocated 20 acres for the innovation hub. It will be the iconic building for NIT Trichy. We are going to invite entrepreneurs from across the world to this hub,” said G Aghila, the director of NIT Trichy.

Agritech, fintech, spacetech, greentech, semiconductors, IoT, metallurgy, quantum computing, generative AI, and machine learning are some of the key areas.

“We are already offering an elective course on business and entrepreneurship,” she added.

In July 2025, the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Trichy and the Illinois Institute of Technology in the US will jointly introduce an online master's degree in artificial intelligence and data science.

Aghila said the university also intends to introduce additional undergraduate programs in developing fields in the future.

The institute currently provides 31 postgraduate programs in addition to 11 undergraduate programs.

On Jan 4, NIT Trichy will hold its worldwide alumni meet in Chennai. It is anticipated that around 1,500 graduates from all over the world would participate.

In the future, the Regional Engineering College's Alumni Association (RECAL), the alumni association, intends to finance students studying overseas and adopt a student, among other activities.

“Under the adopt a student initiative, every alumnus will have an opportunity to adopt one or more students to support their college expenses. We are also planning to offer summer internships and faculty exchange with international institutes of eminence,” said RECAL president Mahalingam Krishnamurthy.

“We want to contribute ₹100 crore in the next five years towards scholarships, supporting research, and startup initiatives,” said Raja Renganathan, president of the NIT Trichy USA Alumni Association.

There are almost 48,000 alumni from NIT Trichy. Among them are 1,300 founders and co-founders, as well as over 930 CEOs.

The global alumni meet is anticipated to include participation from Tamil Nadu IT Minister Palanivel Thiaga Rajan, Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran, and others.
