NCERT rolls out new Class 9 PE textbook as subject becomes compulsory

Physical education has been made a compulsory subject for students from Classes 3 to 10, accompanied by the introduction of a new NCERT Class 9 textbook titled Khel Praveen that focuses on fitness, sports, and overall well-being.

The new textbook reflects a shift in approach, moving beyond routine drills and fitness tests to a broader framework that combines physical activity with scientific understanding.

It introduces concepts related to movement science, encourages students to set personal fitness goals, and connects sports with history, ethics, and values.

The curriculum also highlights career opportunities in physical education and promotes yoga as part of a balanced lifestyle.

The assessment structure has been redesigned to emphasize both knowledge and application. Students will be evaluated with 40% weight each for theory and practical components and 20% for project work.

Theory sections cover key concepts, while practical assessments focus on skills, fitness levels, and performance quality.

Project work is intended to promote real-world engagement, with activities such as designing inclusive games, conducting fitness surveys, and documenting local sports traditions.

This component is aimed at strengthening practical understanding and community interaction.

Khel Praveen also incorporates traditional Indian sports such as Mallakhamb, Thang Ta, Gatka, and Kalaripayattu, introducing students to indigenous practices alongside modern sports education.

The textbook emphasizes a more inclusive and comprehensive model of learning by addressing areas such as gender equity, adaptive sports, and holistic wellness, including aspects like sleep and mindfulness.

Officials say the revised framework is intended to make physical education more relevant and engaging, aligning it with contemporary educational needs while maintaining a connection to India’s sporting heritage.
