National workshop on internationalisation of higher education at IIT Madras

A one-day National Workshop on ‘Internationalisation of Higher Education in India’ was held at IIT Madras on March 29, organized by NITI Aayog’s Education Division as part of the NITI–State workshop series, in collaboration with IIT Madras, the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), and Acumen.

The event brought together over 140 participants, including government officials, representatives from national and international universities, and institutions of national importance, to discuss the challenges, best practices, and policy interventions for advancing internationalization in Indian higher education, in line with the National Education Policy 2020.

Dr Vinod Kumar Paul, Hon’ble Member (Education) at NITI Aayog, delivered the keynote and concluding addresses, while Prof Kamakoti Veezhinathan, Director of IIT Madras, provided the inaugural address.

The workshop featured four technical sessions, covering topics such as academic mobility, internationalization of curricula, and expanding the global presence of Indian universities.

Case studies highlighted the successes of Indian universities setting up campuses abroad and international institutions establishing campuses in India, particularly in GIFT City.

Discussions focused on strategies to enhance infrastructure, streamline regulations, and position India as a hub for global academic collaboration.

The insights from the workshop will contribute to NITI Aayog's ongoing policy research, aiming to position Indian institutions as leaders in global academic excellence and support India’s vision of becoming a developed nation by 2047.
