Inaugurated by: Created and released by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), an international education services company headquartered in the UK.
Aim:
To offer clear perspectives on the worldwide status of universities.
To assist students in choosing universities based on various performance metrics.
To motivate universities to improve research, education, global engagement, and influence.
Essential Findings from QS World University Rankings 2026:
India has 54 institutions listed in the QS World University Rankings 2026, ranking it as the fourth most represented nation.
Only the United States (192), the United Kingdom (90), and Mainland China (72) have a higher number of ranked universities than India.
Eight Indian institutions have made their debut in the rankings. This year, this is the largest count of newcomers from any nation.
The count of Indian universities in the rankings has increased from 11 in 2015 to 54 in 2026. This represents a five-fold rise in slightly more than ten years.
Forty-eight percent of India's ranked universities enhanced their standings in comparison to the last year.
Six Indian universities rank among the world's top 250.
IIT Delhi heads the Indian team. It is positioned 123rd worldwide, advancing from 150th in 2025.
IIT Madras made a significant leap, moving up 47 spots from 227 in 2025 to 180 in 2026.
The list includes 12 Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), showcasing their significant influence in worldwide academia.
