Union Government unveiled an updated plan for the Green India Mission

What is it?

GIM is an essential initiative within NAPCC aimed at increasing forest cover, rehabilitating degraded lands, and supporting India’s climate objectives.

Inaugurated in: 2014

Ministerial Body: Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC)

Goal:

Expand forest/tree coverage by 5 million hectares and enhance forest quality on an additional 5 million hectares.

Capture 2.5-3 billion tons of CO2 by 2030.

Revitalize damaged ecosystems and improve biodiversity.

Fight against land degradation and desertification.

Enhance the well-being of communities reliant on forests.

Main Attributes:

Ecosystem Rehabilitation: Revives damaged forests, grasslands, wetlands, and mangrove areas.

Creation of Carbon Sinks: Supports India’s NDC goal to establish an extra 2.5-3 billion tonnes CO2 sink.

Community Engagement: Emphasizes improving the livelihoods of communities on the outskirts of forests.

Science-Informed Planning: Utilizes FSI data and ecological mapping to identify key restoration areas.

Multi-Sectoral Convergence: Utilizes synergies with initiatives such as the Green Wall Project and CAMPA funds.

Nouveau Changement dans GIM 2025 :

Geographical Emphasis: High importance on Aravallis, Western Ghats, Himalayas, and mangroves.

Green Wall Initiative: Associated with Aravalli Green Wall to combat desertification/airborne dust pollution.

Mining Rehabilitation: Emphasize ecological restoration of deserted mining sites.

Open Forests: Emphasis on restoring open forests — projected 1.89 billion tonnes CO2 capacity.

Revised Goals: Conformity with India’s pledge to restore 26 million hectares of land by 2030.
