National-level skater jumps from third floor at MP school, critically injured

A serious incident occurred at Bodhi International School in Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, when a 13-year-old national-level skater jumped from the third floor after being called to the Principal’s office over a school rule violation.

The Class 8 student, who has won six national medals in skating, had brought a mobile phone to school, recorded a classroom video, and uploaded it online. While the action violated school rules, the Principal reportedly reacted with threats.

Inside the office, CCTV footage shows the boy repeatedly apologizing 52 times over four minutes. The Principal allegedly warned him that she would “end his career,” “take away his medals,” and suspend him.

The distressed student ran out and jumped from the third floor. His father, Pritam Katara, who was waiting nearby, witnessed the aftermath and rushed him to a private hospital.

Doctors confirmed fractures in both legs, spinal injuries, and other trauma, though he is currently stable. Recovery is expected to take several months, with multiple surgeries planned.

SDM Archana Harit confirmed that the mobile phone violation triggered the events but emphasized that the reaction escalated unexpectedly.

“The child is in Class 8. He had brought his phone. He ran and jumped. His condition is stable. An investigation will be conducted. Mobile phones are not allowed in school; even teachers’ phones are confiscated. He is a skater with a very good national-level position,” she said.

The incident has sparked protests by local residents and activists, including the tribal outfit Jai Adivasi Yuva Shakti, demanding legal action against the Principal and a review of school disciplinary practices.

“The boy was punished for bringing a mobile phone and using it. He was mentally tortured and threatened despite apologizing multiple times,” a protest leader said.

Parents expressed shock at the severe consequences, highlighting their son’s achievements and his preparation for an upcoming national-level skating competition in Visakhapatnam.

“He was practicing hard for the national-level meet ten days later, but this incident has left all his dreams shattered,” they said.

Authorities are now investigating the case, with a focus on ensuring child safety and proper handling of minor violations in schools.
