MBBS seat matrix 2026-27 released, total seats rise to over 136,900 across India

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has expanded India's MBBS capacity by approving 9,911 additional undergraduate medical seats for the 2026-27 academic session, taking the country's total sanctioned intake to 136,939 seats across 823 medical colleges, excluding the Institutes of National Importance (INIs).

According to the state-wise MBBS seat matrix released by the Commission, the approved intake includes 127,028 seats that have been renewed and 9,911 newly sanctioned seats.

The approvals cover both newly established medical colleges and enhanced intake capacity in existing institutions, based on permissions granted by the Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB).

Karnataka emerged as the largest beneficiary of the expansion, receiving 1,300 additional MBBS seats. With the increase, the state's total intake has risen to 15,395.

Tamil Nadu ranked next with 950 new seats, taking its overall capacity to 13,999, while Rajasthan added 900 seats to reach a total of 8,080.

Among other states, West Bengal secured 825 additional seats, increasing its total to 7,200, followed by Telangana, which gained 810 seats to reach 10,250.

Uttar Pradesh's MBBS intake increased by 800 seats to 14,000, while Bihar received 740 new seats, taking its total to 4,160. Maharashtra's sanctioned intake rose by 400 seats, bringing its total number of MBBS seats to 13,099.

The Commission also instructed all medical colleges to adhere strictly to the intake approved by MARB during the admission process for the 2026-27 academic session.

"Under no circumstances shall admissions be made in excess of the approved intake capacity. Any admission made beyond the approved number of seats shall be treated as a violation of the provisions of the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, and the regulations framed thereunder, and shall attract appropriate regulatory and penal action against the defaulting Medical College/Institution," the Commission said.
