The new format will retain the existing exam pattern, scoring system, and duration while allowing candidates to complete reading, writing, and listening sections digitally with enhanced features.

IELTS is going fully computer-based in India from September 2026, with IDP Education announcing the transition from the current paper-based format to provide candidates with faster results, increased flexibility, and a more convenient testing experience.
The study abroad consulting company said IELTS on Paper will continue to be available until the end of August 2026. Candidates who prefer the traditional format can appear for the final three paper-based test dates scheduled for July 25, Aug 6, and Aug 22, 2026.

The shift will not bring any changes to the test structure, question format, difficulty level, scoring criteria, or overall duration.
IELTS on computer will follow the same assessment pattern as the paper-based test, with the examination lasting approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes.
In the computer-based format, candidates will complete the listening, reading, and writing sections digitally, while the speaking test will continue to be conducted face-to-face with a certified IELTS examiner.
The computer-delivered test will include features such as typing answers directly on screen, editing responses during the writing section, and using headphones for improved audio clarity during the listening section.
IELTS is one of the most recognized English-language proficiency tests worldwide and is accepted by more than 11,000 organizations across 140 countries. The exam is widely required for overseas education and immigration applications.
