JAB reinstates two-attempt limit for JEE Advance, cancels earlier three-attempt rule

The Joint Admission Board (JAB) has reversed its earlier judgment and reintroduced the old eligibility limitation for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced, allowing candidates to take the exam only twice.

Earlier this month, the board announced that candidates would be permitted to take JEE Advanced three times in three consecutive years.

At the board meeting on Nov 15, it was decided to change this eligibility requirement and return to the only two attempts criterion that has been in place since 2013.

The board said all other exam eligibility would remain the same as those that were issued on Nov 5.

The candidates must rank among the top 250,000 applicants in the BE/BTech paper (paper 1) of JEE Main 2025, including all categories to take the JEE Advance 2025 examination.

Candidates must have been born on or after Oct 1, 2000. SC, ST, and PwD candidates are entitled to a five-year age relaxation in the upper age limit.

Candidates who first appeared for the Class XII (or equivalent) exam in 2024 or 2025 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics are eligible for JEE Advanced 2025.

Those who appeared in 2023 or earlier are ineligible, except under specific conditions related to result declaration dates.

Candidates who have already been admitted to an IIT course, as per JoSAA rules, are not eligible for JEE Advanced 2025.

This includes candidates whose IIT admission was canceled after joining. However, candidates admitted to a preparatory course at an IIT for the first time in 2024 are eligible.

Additionally, candidates who were allotted a seat by JoSAA in previous rounds but did not report, withdrew, or had their seat canceled before the final allotment round are eligible.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced that the application deadline will not be extended.

Candidates must submit their JEE Mains applications before Sep 22. A correction window will be open from Nov 26 to 27.
